| Classic and vintage car ownership
Every year in September West Sussex hosts the Goodwood Revival, a classic and
vintage car festival that showcases some of the most well preserved cars throughout
history in a few fields outside Chichester. The popularity of this event has been
rising exponentially each year proving that our appetite for classic cars continues to
grow.
It could be something to do with a sense of Britishness. Us Brits made some
beautiful, sleek cars back in the day from Aston Martins, Bentleys and Rolls-Royce to
Austin Healeys, MGs and Triumphs which today either no longer exist or have been taken
over, at least in part, by larger foreign super brands. So preserving these is as much
about a love of cars as it is about history and what it is to be British.
If you are lucky to own one of these vintage, style-conscious specimens then you
know that there are additional costs involved to parading you classic vehicle around
town like a model on a catwalk.
Firstly, they are not exactly energy efficient. In fact, they are veritable gas
guzzlers meaning a drive to the local supermarket will cost more than the grocery
shopping you’ll get in the boot.
Secondly, maintaining it, from engine parts to the exterior, is costly and
continually challenging as parts and materials become harder and harder to come by.
Thirdly, you may have to give up family members as your love for the car outstrips
your love for your family. Well, maybe not literally, but you probably spend more time
with the car at weekends than with your spouse and children.
Another rather complicated expense is insurance. If you thought insuring your
family hatch-back was tricky, then you are in for a big surprise when it comes to
insuring that 1974 Triumph that sits quietly in the garage.
You need to decide whether you want to opt for specific classic car insurance or to
add your aging beauty to your standard car-insurance policy. There are pros and cons
to each option and it usually comes down to price and how much the car is actually
worth.
If your car is particularly special such as a vintage Bentley, you may want to opt
for an insurance policy tailored to its needs. Seeing as most standard insurers will
only give you market value on a car, a car of this worth needs extra insurance.
However, it is likely to cost you more and offer you fewer benefits and incentives.
If you choose insurance from a provider such as Kwik Fit Insurance, you can receive
a 20% discount for buying online, a free MOT and 10% off at Kwik Fit centres, plus
your premium will be lower. However, it will only give you market value, so find out
exactly how much you car is worth before making any hard and fast decisions. Take a
look at their site to see if you can get cheap car insurance on your vehicle.
